When you think about Northern Virginia Wineries, do you picture rows of lush Vineyards, delicious wine tastings, social gatherings, beautiful views, and having to find a reliable babysitter? For the most part, that would be the case. Don’t get me wrong, that sounds like a beautiful time, but did you know there are family-friendly options when it comes to vineyards? Pack the kids and family dog in the car because the whole family is welcome to join at Bleu Frog Vineyards.
My family and I truly enjoyed every minute of our time while visiting this beautiful vineyard. The ability to relax for blissful hours, sip wine and enjoy the live music, all while the kids played is unmatched. It was like experiencing a little slice of vineyard heaven. But what makes this family-friendly vineyard even more special? Is it their interesting name? Their patriotic history? Or the stunning views? Honestly, what isn’t there to love? Keep reading, and you’ll see just what I mean.
Loyal supporters of freedom boasting a genuine love for our beautiful country, Jan and Joe Kernan spent 30 dedicated years moving from place to place, serving the United States Navy. They hoped to one day have the ability to put down some much-needed long-lasting routes to foster and grow into a wonderful life. In 2014, their long-awaited search for farmland to plant their roots began when retirement time came. In 2016 they bought the old Whitestone Farm, and their new life of wine-making started.
The fun and unique name Blue Frog Vineyards comes from a combination of Jan’s love and passion for the French culinary arts and Joe’s dedicated years as a “frogman” (member of a US Naval underwater demolition team). Even though the two had no experience cultivating grapevines, they learned a lot from other neighboring winemakers like Doug Fabbioli from Fabbioli Cellars. In 2019 they harvested their first crop from their vines, and with Fabbioli’s help and their first batch of wine was a delicious success. They knew then and there that this was the path for them and how they wanted to plant their roots.

What makes this winery stand out? They are family-friendly! That’s right, bring the kids and the family dog and enjoy a beautiful day, a custom picnic, and live music! Kids love the sandpit with toys as parents relax and enjoy their time. It’s like experiencing a mini vacation. No outside alcoholic beverages or outside food is permitted except on a limited term for those with dietary needs.
Of course, there are plenty of beautiful and accommodating Northern Virginia Wineries to visit. Still, the Bleu Frog Vineyards will be a favorite for my family. Just thinking about a warm summer day enjoying their Froze (frozen rose) while the kids have slushies brings a smile to my face. It’s nice to get out and away from the kids, but it’s lovely having the option to tag them along and enjoy things as a family as well. You can find this vineyard at 16413 James Monroe Hwy, Leesburg, VA 20176.
